The two watches cut off from One UI 9 Watch

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic won't receive the One UI 9 Watch update, according to Engadget · Tech e gadget (US). The list is short: those are the only two products named as excluded.

The Watch 4 line launched in 2021 and has already taken four major OS upgrades: One UI Watch 4.5, One UI 5 Watch, One UI 6 Watch and One UI 8 Watch. Limited editions fall under the same cutoff, including the Galaxy Watch 4 Golf Edition and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Thom Browne Edition.

Samsung released the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 in August with One UI 9 Watch already on board.

What stops arriving on the Watch 4

Missing One UI 9 Watch won't slow the watch down, per Engadget. What you lose is the stream of bug fixes, new features and security updates.

Future app compatibility is another open question. The report flags it without a firm answer, so nobody can say today which apps will keep working on the older hardware.

The gap comes from support length. Samsung raised the Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 to five major OS upgrades. Earlier watches in the lineup get four, and the Watch 4 has used all of them.

Which watches get the update, and when

Galaxy Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and everything above them will get One UI 9 Watch by the end of 2026, according to Engadget.

Beta builds are already circulating for the Galaxy Watch 7 and 8 lineups. The sixth One UI 9 Watch beta went out in late October for Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic owners in South Korea.

On the feature side, the update brings a refined visual interface, the option to raise your wrist to wake an AI assistant, and health metrics including Daily Cardio Load and a Heart Health Score.

Upgrade or keep the old watch

If you're still wearing a Watch 4 or Watch 4 Classic, Engadget suggests moving to a newer model to stay on current OS upgrades. The Galaxy Watch 9 arrived in August with better hardware and features such as sleep apnea detection and skin temperature tracking, plus five years of upgrades.

Engadget calls that a good long-term proposition next to the Pixel Watch 5, which it says gets three years of guaranteed updates. If the physical rotating bezel is what keeps you on the Watch 4 Classic, the outlet points to the Watch 8 Classic.

A new watch isn't the only route. The old one can become a dedicated sleep tracker, a smart home dashboard or a media remote, or go to someone else.

What to check before you decide

The Watch 4 line is where Samsung moved from Tizen OS to a custom-skinned Wear OS, Google's smartwatch platform. That makes it the oldest generation in the current software chain.

Before you shop, look at what you actually use the watch for. If security patches and new features matter, the cutoff is the signal. If it's a bedside sleep tracker or a remote for your living room, the hardware still does that job.

One thing to watch: app compatibility. Engadget leaves it as an open question, so keep an eye on the apps you rely on rather than assuming they'll stay supported.
