GTA 6 on PC: ex-Rockstar director flags AI port risk

What Vermeij expects from an AI-made port

Obbe Vermeij, once technical director at Rockstar North, thinks an AI-generated PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6 is plausible. He told RockPaperShotgun that generative AI "really has changed the world". His worry: someone could take the PS5 build and have AI convert it for PC.

That port, in his words, wouldn't match the developer's own work. It could still dent sales, he argues. So he wouldn't be surprised if Rockstar tried to bring the releases closer together.

Cost and time of an AI conversion

Vermeij says he doesn't know Rockstar's plans. Speaking from his technical background, he calls generative AI tools "probably" able to pull off a GTA 6 PC port.

It wouldn't be quick. He describes hours and hours of work, plus a token bill he estimates in the tens of thousands of dollars. Even so, he thinks people will try it because it's GTA.

Clones already in the wild

AI footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 has already spread online, with slop videos pulling millions of views. Some have run trailer clips through Nvidia's DLSS5 tool.

The game itself won't ship with generative AI or microtransactions at launch. Cloning remains a live issue: developers have cancelled public demos over copying fears, and Valve has said studios should make games more original to prevent it.
