Call of Duty climbs the weekly charts

Circana's Mat Piscatella shared new figures on how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 performed in its opening week. The firm ranks games by weekly player counts, not concurrent players, and puts them into a top 10 list. Following the release, Call of Duty rose two places to take 2nd spot on PlayStation hardware, covering PS4 and PS5. On Xbox, the shooter moved ahead of NBA 2K27 to claim third. The biggest jump came on Steam's US charts, where Call of Duty went from 32nd to 6th.

On Xbox, 17% against 29% in 2025

The Xbox picture is less strong when set against the previous year. During the week of the Modern Warfare 4 launch, Call of Duty accounted for 17% of active players on Xbox. During Black Ops 7's 2025 launch, that figure was 29%. Pure Xbox notes that the comparison is not like for like: Black Ops 7 had a much larger player pool to draw from, having launched as the last Call of Duty day one title on Xbox Game Pass.

A staggered launch before 23 October

Modern Warfare 4 did not arrive all at once. It had a staggered launch, with early access to its campaign and DMZ modes ahead of the full release on 23 October. The Circana week measured covers the period ending 24 October. Pure Xbox also reports that the game earned the highest review scores the series has seen since Black Ops on Xbox 360.

What the weekly count leaves out

The ranking is built on weekly active players, so it counts people who open the game at some point in that week. It is not a measure of simultaneous players. Readers in the comments under the Pure Xbox report raise their own caveats: one says they bought the game but will not show up in player metrics until they start it, and another points to the absence of Game Pass as a factor for Xbox interest. Those are reader opinions, not findings from the Circana data.

What the figures cover

The figures cover a single launch week ending 24 October. The concrete numbers are the two Xbox shares, 17% and 29%, and the chart moves: 2nd on PlayStation, 3rd on Xbox, 6th on Steam in the US. Anything beyond that week is not in the data Piscatella shared.
