Stranger Things prequel: Nevada, 1955, streaming in 2028

Netflix used Stranger Things day to greenlight a live-action prequel series. The show is called Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, and the company confirmed it takes place in the 1950s, before both the original series and the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The announcement teaser places the story in Marion, Nevada, in 1955. It shows an abandoned bicycle with a radio attached, then pans up to a "restricted area" sign and a sky that erupts with a loud boom. The series arrives on Netflix in 2028.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, are executive producers on the new series, even though they have moved to Paramount. In a statement they called the project something they had dreamed about for years, describing it as familiar but with a new setting and new heroes and villains.

Kate Trefry is co-creator, showrunner and writer. She has written on Stranger Things for a long time and wrote the script for The First Shadow. Joe Wright, known for Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, directs the first three episodes.

The stage play The First Shadow ends its London West End run on December 27 and its Broadway run on January 3. A recording of the play is reportedly headed to Netflix.

The animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales from '85 returned for a second season in September. Netflix also released a blooper reel from the final season of the main show.
