Penguin Colony: PS2-style horror with penguins, Nazis and Lovecraft

What Penguin Colony actually is

At first glance it reads as a cute throwback to the PlayStation 2 era. You play a penguin that waddles, slides and swims through a shadowy Antarctic wilderness, following a mysterious light. Then the other elements show up: Nazis, ancient cosmic horrors, and a critique of colonialism under the ice.

The game comes from Origanme Digital, the studio behind Umurangi Generation. It reworks H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness through the eyes of Antarctica's indigenous inhabitants. The result, as described to Polygon, is a personal work of psychological horror built on a premise that sounds absurd until you play it.

Why the developer chose a game over any other medium

Tali Faulkner, a Māori developer from New Zealand, told Polygon that games are the only art form where interaction is compulsory. You can walk through an exhibit and engage with it, he said, but in a game you actually have to do something.

He said it was important that the material was not talked around or softened into something a player could shrug off. Once dialogue and photographs went in, the team built small set pieces that only work in a game. One example he gives: being near something that does not acknowledge you back, for as long as you choose to stay.

Exploration is not punished

Faulkner describes a game that lets you leave the main path without penalty. Wander off and you find different things instead of a fail state. Toward the end, when you reach the city, there is a lot of content there, and you can miss nearly all of it.

What you get at the end, he says, are realizations about the universe: that there is a colonial origin, something older than mankind and far more violent, and that the idea repeats across history. Players who go looking for more are rewarded for the search.

The real-world anger behind the fiction

For Faulkner, the creatures in Penguin Colony are less frightening than the real atrocities that inspired them. In the interview he explains why he felt compelled to confront the violence in Palestine, and what he sees as the games industry failing to respond to horrors happening in plain sight.

He also stresses that level design and core mechanics got the same attention as the message. The game is meant to be extremely playable, not a lecture with a controller attached.

What is still open

The interview covers the ideas and the design philosophy, not the logistics. There is no release date, price or platform list in what Faulkner discusses with Polygon. If you are planning around Penguin Colony, those details still need to come from the studio.

What is clear is the intent: a lo-fi horror game that wants to put the games industry on notice, in Faulkner's words, while still playing well. Whether the finished game lands both halves is something only the release will show.
