Grok's Odyssey: seven minutes of AI film, not the full movie

Seven minutes instead of a feature film

Three months after Elon Musk said Grok would put out a full-length, historically accurate movie version of The Odyssey, the company published seven minutes. It now calls that footage Episode 1 of an Odyssey series. The clip was made with Grok Imagine in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, per Grok's own post.

So the promise and the delivery don't match yet. If you were waiting for an AI feature film, what exists today is a short first installment. Whether more episodes follow is not confirmed.

What the footage actually looks like

TechCrunch's reviewer expected something far uglier and came away partly surprised. There are moments where the sailors and the sea could pass for real footage if you didn't know the origin. That is a real step up from other AI clips Musk has posted recently.

The problems show up elsewhere. The voiceover backstory drags on, then gives way to a parade of bearded faces shouting stiff lines. The reviewer says the result lacks artistry, inspiration, or human interest. Those are judgments, not measurements, and they come from TechCrunch · AI.

The accuracy claim doesn't hold up

Musk billed the project as historically accurate. The reviewer can't vouch for that and notes some obvious fudging: nobody speaks ancient Greek. The narrator uses a British accent familiar to anyone who has played a fantasy game or watched a Hollywood epic in the last 25 years.

If historical fidelity is what you care about, this first episode gives you little to check against. The claim came from Musk, and the released footage doesn't settle it either way.

Why Musk picked this fight

The timing isn't neutral. Musk had attacked Christopher Nolan's Odyssey over the casting of nonwhite and transgender actors. Nolan, for his part, has called himself a techno-skeptic and said that before AI he'd never seen a technology so completely rejected by the public.

Nolan's film, shot across six countries with thousands of cast and crew, became a box office hit after its July release and is seen as an awards front-runner. The Grok version reads as a direct counterpoint to that kind of practical filmmaking.

What this means if you build with video AI

Treat this as a demo of what Grok Imagine can do in a short, controlled piece, not proof it can carry a feature. The strongest moments are individual shots; the weak points are pacing, dialogue and voice. That split matters if you're planning to use these tools for anything longer than a clip.

Grok has asked viewers whether they want a full breakdown of how the episode was made. That's an offer, not a published method. Until it appears, the workflow behind the seven minutes stays undisclosed.

What to watch next

The open question is whether Episode 1 becomes a series or stays a one-off. There's no confirmed date for more footage, and no word on length or release plan beyond what Grok posted.

For now, the honest read is this: a short AI clip that looks better than expected in places and hollow in others. I haven't watched it beyond what's described here, and I haven't tested Grok Imagine. If you're evaluating the tool, wait for the breakdown or for a longer cut before drawing conclusions.
