OpenAI is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT. The company announced the move in an email sent to users, as reported by TechCrunch · AI. The change is meant to cut down the confusion of a desktop app that already splits ChatGPT and Codex into separate sections.
At first, only select users will get the merged experience, so OpenAI can collect feedback. A wider rollout comes later.
Files, plugins and web tasks in one view
In the email, OpenAI describes the merged setup as a way to go from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through in one place. You can bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while you review and guide its work.
Codex stays a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app, according to the same email.
One token pool, and who may wait longer
With the transition, ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool. OpenAI says this won't affect most users. Depending on usage and model, some people might need to wait for resets more often.
TechCrunch · AI notes that rival Anthropic merged Claude's chat and Cowork functions into one screen in September.
