Steam players rate the campaign Very Positive
On Steam, the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 holds a Very Positive rating of 92 percent, based on more than 3,100 user reviews. Eurogamer reports the score has been climbing as players work through more missions.
The campaign runs a little over six hours, so many early players have likely finished it. Access began on Friday and required a digital pre-order of any edition. The full release is not until 23rd October.
That timing matters: the rating reflects a pre-order audience, not the whole player base. Eurogamer notes these are probably the series' keenest players, who may be more lenient.
How it compares with earlier Call of Duty launches
The contrast with last year is stark. Black Ops 7 sits at Mostly Negative on 37 percent, according to Eurogamer. Within the rebooted Modern Warfare line, 2019's Modern Warfare reached Mostly Positive at 79 percent, while 2022's Modern Warfare 2 landed at Mixed on 45 percent. Black Ops: Cold War is close to the 2019 game at 79 percent.
On those figures, Eurogamer calls Modern Warfare 4 the highest-rated Call of Duty in over a decade. Ratings move with each major update, so the current position is a snapshot rather than a settled verdict.
Player counts stay hidden until release
You cannot yet judge the launch by how many people are playing. SteamDB, which Eurogamer uses for player data, cannot report numbers without its tracking bot holding a copy of the game. That gap should close once the game releases on 23rd October.
Eurogamer's own review is also pending, as code arrived late last week. IGN published a campaign review on Friday and scored it 8/10.
DMZ and multiplayer will test the rating
The campaign is only the first part. DMZ, the extraction shooter mode, unlocks on 20th October for pre-orders, a day after the campaign's early access began. Traditional multiplayer follows on 23rd October.
Eurogamer expects that multiplayer launch to be the point where user sentiment could shift, if it shifts at all. The campaign score alone will not tell you how the full package lands.
