What changed in Story Missions

Solo players in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 can now take on a Story Mission without meeting other players, but only on their first attempt. Eurogamer reports the change after players spotted it on Reddit. Infinity Ward has not officially announced it.

At launch this was not the case. Story Mission instances seemed to allow fewer players than other modes, yet encounters with others were still possible. The name suggested a private instance, but it was not one.

Eurogamer's test and the caveats

Eurogamer says it completed a Story Mission on a first attempt while making as much noise as possible, and met no other players. The Recent Players list was empty, and no UAV Towers or SAM Sites had been activated, which is unusual in PvPvE matches.

Concrete warnings remain. The source notes you may still run into others in a Story Mission, so it is best not to lower your guard. Repeated attempts after the first will be much less forgiving.

What it means for solo players

In DMZ, the deployment type you pick decides your matchmaking pool. You can roam the map freely and pick up tasks as you go, or join Dynamic Ops, which generate tasks in a more structured way. Story Missions are a third option.

The change highlights a split in the DMZ community. Many would rather not cross paths with other players, and it is especially frustrating for those expecting a purely PvE mode. Infinity Ward has maintained the mode is designed as a PvPvE experience.
